  • Class: ENGLISH 111
  • Instructor: J Brody
  • Assignment: Research Essay

Task

Choose one of the following topics: 1)Choose a writer who interests you from our syllabus. (Make sure that it is someone about whom reviews/criticism have been written.) Analyze one or more of his/her texts, incorporating critical opinions of others. While you may use biographical information in your paper, I do not want your research essay to be a mini-biography. Instead, the paper should focus on analyzing the literary text(s) of the author you choose. (You may focus on stories, poems, a novel or a play written by that author that we did not read in class, as long as you have read it; just clear your choice with me.) OR 2)Choose a topic from literature/medicine. Explore this topic in light of the pertinent literature we have read or will read (one or more pieces) and outside sources. For example, if you have proposed a question about mental illness, you will need to show how your research informed your reading of a story, poem, or novel (“Silver Water,” “The Yellow Wallpaper,” etc).
